Eye-Catching Advertising

These advertisements were sent to me today and I thought I would share. Some are pretty funny.
And, if you are not one who looks at details...the one with the cup with the nose is for a plastic surgery company (gave me a chuckle).

thanks chu!

Condoms 'too big' for Indian men

This article from BBC was too good to pass up.

A survey of more than 1,000 men in India has concluded that condoms made according to international sizes are too large for a majority of Indian men.

The study found that more than half of the men measured had penises that were shorter than international standards for condoms.

It has led to a call for condoms of mixed sizes to be made more widely available in India. The conclusion of all this scientific endeavour is that about 60% of Indian men have penises which are between three and five centimetres shorter than international standards used in condom manufacture.

Doctor Chander Puri, a specialist in reproductive health at the Indian Council of Medical Research, told the BBC there was an obvious need in India for custom-made condoms, as most of those currently on sale are too large. Mr Puri said that since Indians would be embarrassed about going to a chemist to ask for smaller condoms there should be vending machines dispensing different sizes all around the country.

"Smaller condoms are on sale in India. But there is a lack of awareness that different sizes are available. There is anxiety talking about the issue. And normally one feels shy to go to a chemist's shop and ask for a smaller size condom."

But Indian men need not be concerned about measuring up internationally according to Sunil Mehra."It's not size, it's what you do with it that matters," he said.

"From our population, the evidence is Indians are doing pretty well.

Garden in Transit Coming To New York This Fall

This Fall, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of New York’s first motorized taxi, over 13,000 New York City yellow taxicabs will be covered with bright, colorful flowers. It's all part of "Garden in Transit", a massive public art project funded by Portraits of Hope, a non-profit arts, education and creative therapy program.

Starting last September, New York city school children from local hospitals, after-school programs, and recreation centers have been painting colorful flowers onto self-adhesive stickers that will then be affixed on yellow taxicabs beginning this coming September.

Happy 50th Birthday Helvetica!

For those type geeks out there, Helvetica is celebrating its 50th birthday. Business Week is running a nice article on the impact that Helvetica has had on many corporations throughout its lifetime. From Microsoft, Fendi, Toyota, Jeep, Nestle, Staples, and the list goes on. Check it out and join me in giving this readable, and somewhat overused, typeface a nice "hip, hip, horray!"

GOOD Magazine

A co-worker of mine (thanks princess!) turned me on to GOOD Magazine, which speaks on important ideas driving change in this world. Touching on mediums from creative to environmental, its well worth the $20 online subscription - AND - 100% of the $20 goes to help an organization of your choice. Pretty incredible!

From founder Ben Goldhirsh, "While so much of today's media is taking up our space, dumbing us down, and impeding our productivity, GOOD exists to add value. Through a print magazine, feature and documentary films, original multimedia content and local events, GOOD is providing a platform for the ideas, people, and businesses that are driving change in the world."

Highway Turbine

Here's an idea I ran across in Good Magazine, of which everyone should subscribe.

"All the cars and trucks driving down highways are producing a lot of energy, as well as a lot of pollution. Here is an idea that would convert that energy into electricity, so that maybe the emissions could be balanced out: turbines above the road that are turned by the wind from passing vehicles."

Grand Canyon Skywalk

Grand Canyon West, a destination owned and operated by the Hualapai Tribe at the Grand Canyon’s western rim, announces March 28, 2007 as the official public opening date of The Skywalk. The Skywalk will be the first-ever cantilever shaped glass walkway to suspend more than 4,000 feet above the canyon’s floor and extend 70 feet from the canyon’s rim.

Literal Love Seat

The new creation from designer James Hopkins. According to Hopkins, "I noticed the shape of some chairs was similar to the letters of the alphabet,' Hopkins says, ‘and by removing certain sections from the chairs I could reveal a message that commented on the possibilities of the chair's function. Love is the hidden meaning but we don't see that initially because we choose to see what is first presented to the mind, in this case the chairs,’ he explains.

Though I suppose this design would be alittle less desireable for it to live up to its name.

Ticking Photography

In his recently opened solo show, photographer Guido Mocafico concentrates on the concept of time. Here Mocafico explores the precise movement of a mechanical system to measure time. Mocafico has photographed pieces by Audemars Piguet, Breguet, Chopard, Gerald Genta, Greubel Forsey, IWC, Jacquet Droz and Patek Philippe.

His show, entitled 'Movement', runs from May 2nd-June 2nd 2007 at the Hamiltons Gallery in London. For more information check out their website: hamiltonsgallery.com

What are they saying to me?

American Apparel recently placed a new billboard in the LES of a picture of Woody Allen dressed as a rabbi with Hebrew writing beside him. I asked my Israeli friend to translate and he said it wasnt even typical Hebrew, therefore making it impossible to translate. So why is this an advertisement for American Apparel? I know the company is owned by Israeli's, ironic yes, but that is the only connection I can come up with.

Great Shopping Bag Ideas

I ran across a few of these, some others were sent to me, but they all have the same thing in common: all are just down-right cool. I'd definitely like to be seen walking down Houston with one of them!
